 THIS WAS OUR FIRST TIME OUT FOR THE YEAR AND WE HAD SOME "RUST" TO KNOCK OFF...
FROM THE GET GO LITTLE THINGS JUST KEPT GOING WRONG, FROM OUR HOTEL RESERVATIONS BEING MISBOOKED TO LOSING KEYS. HOWEVER AS THESE THINGS KEPT HAPPENING WE KEPT OUR COOL. ONLY TWO OF US MADE THE TRIP AS THE OTHER HALF OF THE TEAM COULD NOT GET OFF WORK, SO WE TRUDGED ON.AN I REMEMBER TALKING WITH MY FRIEND CHRIS LILLEY JUST LAST WEEK ABOUT NOT GETTING OVER-SERIOUS ABOUT COMPETING. SO WE JUST STARTED TO LAUGH A LITTLE, AND WE HAD FUN. WE RELAXED, AND WE VISITED FRIENDS, AND WE HAD FUN. SOME FOLKS JUST GETTING BACK FROM THE JACK AND HAD STORIES TO TELL. OTHERS WE HAVE NOT SEEN IN MONTHS AND WE HAD CATCHING UP TO DO, SO WE DID. LOOKING BACK NOW I THINK THIS WAS JUST WHAT WE NEEDED. WE WERE NOT CONCERNED WITH THE PRESSURES OF EVERYDAY LIFE WE LEFT BEHIND. WE REALIZED AGAIN WHY WE LOVE TO DO THIS. FOR THE LOVE OF THE FUN WE HAVE, FOR THE FRIENDS WE MAKE, AND THE GOOD TIMES. I THINK MOST BARBECUE FOLKS WILL RELATE TO THIS. WE HAD FUN AND EVEN THOUGH OUR SCORES COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER, WE WERE NOT DISPLEASED WITH OUR FINISHES OVERALL. WE HAD A GREAT TIME. WE HAD FRIENDS COME TO OUR AID WHEN WE NEEDED IT AND WE ENJOYED THE BARBECUE EVENT . 

BBQ FOR KIDS- 2 DAY EVENT IN MESA AZ.2011

WELL THIS WAS OUR FIRST TWO DAY EVENT AND WE WERE APPREHENSIVE AS TO WHAT OUR TURN OUT WOULD BE. I HAVE TO SAY WE ARE PLEASANTLY HAPPY WITH TWO TENTH PLACE OVERALL TOTALS, SURE WE ALWAYS WANT BETTER BUT I HAVE LEARNED OVER THESE LAST FEW YEARS, AND AS OUR TEAM IS LEARNING, WE NEED TO FOCUS ON WHAT WE DO-BE HONEST WITH OURSELVES AND STRIVE FOR EVEN THE SMALLEST OF IMPROVEMENTS. THE QUESTION CAME UP - WHAT ARE WE NOT DOING RIGHT? HOW DO SOME TEAMS SEEM TO HIT CALLS AT ALMOST EVERY EVENT? AND WE CANT SEEM TO FIND THE SECRETS....

WELL WE HAVE ALWAYS DONE WELL IN RIBS ALMOST ALWAYS IN THW TOP 10 AND WITHIN THE LAST YEAR OR SO WE HAVE ACHIEVED SIMILAR RESULTS WITH PORK, SO WE HAVE BEEN NARROWING IN ON BRISKET AND BELEIVE WE HAVE FINALLY COME UPOUN OUR RECIPE FOR SUCCESS. CHICKEN HOWEVER HAS ALWAYS SEEMED TO BEFUDDLE US! WE MADE SOME CHANGES ON DAY TWO AND A THREAT- TO SING A SONG IF WE SCORE 10TH OR BETTER- WELL GUESS WHAT WE GOT 10TH- AND THE SONG MAY NOW BE INFAMOUS! "WE CAN'T COOK CHICKEN"

BUT THE POINT IS WE KEEP GOING OUT- MANY OF MY PROLIFIC PIERS WHO SEEM TO WIN FREQUENTLY HAVE INSISTED THAT CONSISTENCY ABOVE ALL ELSE WILL NARROW THE ROADS TO THE WINNERS STAGE! AND I MUST TELL YOU AS WE CONTINUE TO COMPETE WE SEEM TO GET BETTER AND I KNOW SOON WE WILL TASTE THE FRUITS....

BUT WHEN YOU DON'T COOK OFTENEVENTHE SLIGHTEST DIFFERENCES MAY EFFECT YOU MORE THAN YOU KNOW..SO WE CONTINUE AND WE WE STILL EVALUATE EVERY DETAIL AS IT CONSUMES US, AND MANY OTHERS I AM SURE WE TRY TO KEEP THE FOCUS ON WHATS REALLY IMPORTANT- WE LOOK GOOD DOING IT! WE HAVE FUN AND ARE SPENDING TIME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS!

SO HERE WE ARE AT THE END OF YET ANOTHER YEAR...AND I COULDN'T HELP BUT THINK ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF TIME WE SEEM TO DEVOTE TO OUR BELOVED SPORT OF BARBECUE. THE AMOUNT OF HOURS AND MILES ON THE ROAD, THE DOLLARS SPENT FOR HOTEL ROOMS, MEALS, GALLONS UPON GALLONS OF GAS. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF POUNDS OF CHARCOAL AND CHORDS OF WOOD NOT TO MENTION ALL THE GADGETS WE THINK WE NEED TO BETTER OUR BARBECUE TURNOUTS. THERE ARE MEATS AND SAUCES AND RUBS AND INJECTIONS AND GROCERIES AND DISPLAY PLATTERS AND SO ON...THEN I LOOK AT THE OLD TROPHY SHELF AND THINK IT'S NOT ENOUGH....I AM HUMBLED AT HOW FORTUNATE WE ARE THAT WE LIVE IN A COUNTRY WHERE WE ARE ALLOWED TO CHASE OUR DREAMS AND DISPLAY OUR PASSIONS SO AS WE CONTINUE IN 2012 TO CHASE OUR DREAM OF GETTING TO A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP COOK...WE WILL DO SO CONTENT THAT ONLY IN AMERICA CAN WE! BE SAFE MY FRIENDS, WHEREVER YOUR TRAVELS MAY TAKE YOU AND WHOMEVER YOU BE COOKING NEXT TO BE HAPPY AND LIVE THE SPIRIT THAT IS BARBECUE! GOD BLESS AMERICA AND MY YOUR FIRES NEVER GO OUT!

JUST RETURNED FROM THE HAVASU CITY -MUSIC BREWS AND BARBECUE (3RD ANNUAL) COOKOFF

WHERE WE FINISHED 3RD OVERALL BEHIND SLAP YOUR DADYY-GC

AND LITTLE MISS BBQ-RGC

SO NOT A BAD WAY TO START THE NEW YEAR-WE WERE TESTED TO PUT IT MILDLY AS THE WIND BLEW AT ABOUT 0KNOTS MOST OF THE WEEKEND ANS THAT ALWAYS SEEMS TO MAKE FOR A MISERABLE WEEKEND. WE USED 40% MORE CHARCOLA AND WOOD THAN USUAL AND IT SEEMED AS WE HURRIED TO GET PACKED AND GET OUT OF TOWN SO WE ORGOT MANY THING- BUT AS WE FOUND OUT ONE OF OUR FRIENDS "I.A.B.30" HAD A VERY BAD ACCIDENT ON THEIR WAY WE REALIZED HOW FORTUNATE WE WERE.WE REALLY WERE HAPPY WHITH OUR RESULTS CONSIDERING ALL THE CHALLENGES AND WE MANAGED TO HAVE SOME FUN TOO...WE LEARNED SOME THINGS ABOUT OURSELVES AS A TEAM, LIKE WE NEED A CHECKLIST... AND ARE HAPPY TO BE STARTING THE YEAR OUT SO WELL! I WILL REALLY THINK OF THINGS DIFFERENTLY FROM HERE ON OUT AND MY FRIENDS, WHEN I TELL YOU TRAVEL SAFE- PLEASE DO- SLOW DOWN AND LIVE LONGER SO WE CAN SEE YOU ALL AT THE NEXT COOK!
