I REMEMBER BEING AT "THE JACK"IN 2008 AND WHEN THEY CALLED OUT THE GRAND CHAMPIONS I THOUGHT WHO?
 I HAD NEVER HEARD OF "FOUR LEGS UP"
WELL LET ME TELL YOU NOW... I HAVE BEEN HEARING ABOUT THIS TEAM EVER SINCE.
KELLY AND HIS CREW SEEM TO HAVE FIGURED IT ALL OUT BECAUSE THE HAVE MADE A HABBIT OF RACKIN UP SOME WINS IN THE LAST YEAR  SINCE THAT COOL AFTERNOON DOWN IN THE HOLLOW!
WELL SINCE THEN I HAVE ALSO HAD THE PLEASURE, AS SOME OF YOU HAVE, TO MEET AND COOK AGAINST KELLY, WHO SAYS HE RACKS UP ABOUT A "GAZILLION THOUSAND MILES" TRAVELING AROUND TO " HAVE SOME FUN".
THE WERTZ FAMILY STARTED SOMEWHERE IN NEBRASKA, THATS RIGHT THEY'RE CORNHUSKERS , AND I GUESS THEY DO SOME "QUE" IN NEBRASKA.... ANYWAYS AROUND ABOUT 2000 THEY DID SOME CATERINGS AND THINGS WENT PRETTY WELL. BY THE YEAR 2003 KELLY AND CREW HAD ENTERED IN THIER FIRST CONTEST AND WELL YOU KNOW IT THEY CAUGHT "THE BUG".
WELL THAT GREW AND GREW AND SOON A RESTAURANT IN AN OLD REFURBISHED GAS STATION IN MC COOL, NEBRASKA. THEY SOON OUT GREW THAT PLACE AND SOMEHOW "THINGS FELL INTO PLACE" AS KELLY PUT IT, IN GREAT BEND. WELL IN 2004 THE FAMILY GAVE UP FARMING AND WERE FULL TIME HANDLING THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS.
 NOW THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT "MY WONDERFUL WIFE" RUNS THINGS AND THATS HOW KELLY GETS OUT "TO PLAY BBQ" AS OFTEN AS HE DOES AND HE ALSO CREDITS "GOOD PEOPLE" WORKING WITH THEM.

THE "FOUR LEGS UP TEAM" HAS WON THE GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE JACK DANIELS WORLD INVITATIONAL IN 2008,
AND ALSO THE BEST SAUCE ON THE PLANET AT THE KANSAS CITY ROYALE IN 2005 SO I ASKED HIM WHAT KEEPS HIM MOTIVATED?
"COOKING BETTER BARBECUE, WINNING SOME MORE AND JUST RIDING IT WHERE IT GOES."
KELLY SAYS HE IS NEVER SATISFIED AND ALWAYS TRYING TO BE BETTER.
I HAVE FOUND KELLY TO BE AN INSPIRATION IN THAT AFTER ALL THE BIG WINS HE STILL HAS BAD DAYS AT A CONTEST,
HE SAYS"SOMETIMES I THINK THE MORE YOU WORRY ABOUT IT THE WORSE IT GOES...IF YOUR SCORES AREN'T GOOD,
WELL I HAVE FOUND THAT MORE OFTEN THAN MOST THE PRODUCT ISNT WHERE IT SHOULD BE."
KELLY IS NOT THE SUPERSTITIOUS TYPE YET HE SAYS HIS KEYS TO SUCCESS HAVE BEEN ONE: WORK AT CONSISTENCY
AND TWO: IF YOU HAVE GOOD BARBECUE IT WILL BE GOOD ANYWHERE SO KEEP IT CONSISTENT, DON'T BE "DINKIN" AROUND WITH IT TOO MUCH!"
BUT HE'LL MORE THAN LIKELY ALWAYS HAVE A BOTTLE OF JACK IN THE FRIDGE AND POP TARTS FOR BREAKFAST!

"THERE'S A LOT OF GOOD RIBS OUT THERE, YOU REALLY HAVE TO BRING SOMETHING TO EACH CONTEST."
KELLY TOLD ME THE BEST THING ABOUT BARBECUE CONTESTS IS, THE PEOPLE, FRIENDS,MEMORIES AND SHARING IT WITH HIS FAMILY.
WELL RONI, KEELAN, AND KELSI THAT SOUNDS PRETTY GOOD TO ME!

THE FOUR LEGS UP CREW IS OFF TO THE ROYALE IN KANSAS CITY AND THEN THEY WILL CLOSE DOWN THE RESTAURANT TO MAKE THE WEEKLONG JOURNEY TO THE JACK - GOOD LUCK MY FRIENDS!
