In May this year I sent a recipe in for THE NATIONAL PORK BOARD'S recipe contest for "THE OTHER
WHITE MEAT.COM" DON'T BE BLAH -"BRING IT TONG" recipe contest. They were looking
to crown " THE BOLDEST GRILLER IN AMERICA"
So I took a chance and entered.My sons
had seen Guy Fiery on Fox5NEWS in our area and prodded me to try it. So I got on line and checked it out.When I was a boy
my grandmother used to make Pork Empanadas and they were one of my favorite dishes.So I set out to emulate her recipe. I figured
many people would use Pork Tenderloins so I went with Ground Pork. I developed my recipe for "Poppin Pork Burgers with
Green Apple Slaw"( The recipe can be seen on www.theotherwhitemeat.com) Well sometime later I had gotten a call that I was one of three finalists and that I had won a new Charbroil InfaRed
grill from Charbroil and an all expense paid trip for two to New York City and a chance to cook off for the grand prize of
$5000 and the Golden Tongs. Well I showed, and I cooked and he judged. That's right Guy Fiery was the final judge . Based
on Originality, Boldness of Flavor and Ease of preparation, well you guessed it I WON! Holy Cow ! I want to thank all the
people from the Pork Council and also Weber Shandwick for their totally awesome contest and I can't wait till next year!
The money, well I am currently using those funds to build my own competition Barbecue Rig... but that's another story
for another time.
